Artist Statement
I am a mixed media artist inspired by the vast openness of the Great Lakes, seas, and oceans. On birch panels, I create warm, minimalist renditions of waves, the delicate lace patterns left by the tide on the sand, or simply the feeling of calmness. Using organic and recycled materials, my work shifts between two-dimensional and tactile, inviting both visual and sensory engagement.
I have spent countless hours combing the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Superior, searching for birds hidden within pieces of driftwood. Much like a child finding shapes in the clouds, I look down at the sand, discovering the essence of birds in weathered wood. One by one, these lifeless fragments are reborn as sculptures. I seek to uncover the story of each bird—where it came from before washing ashore—giving new life to what was once adrift.
BIO
Dominique Cinq-Mars Delay is a mixed media and assemblage artist based in New Dundee, Ontario. Since 2013, she has been exhibiting her work in the Kitchener-Waterloo region. Her practice focuses on minimalist, warm depictions of waves and water bodies on birch panels, as well as small-scale bird sculptures crafted from found driftwood.
Inspired by the lakes, rivers, and coastlines she has visited across Canada and beyond, Dominique works with a range of materials — both organic and industrial — including recycled copper and steel. Using simple tools in her home studio, she assembles textured compositions that evoke the movement and tranquility of water.
Dominique is primarily self-taught but has taken courses at L’École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and in her local community. Her work has been exhibited at the Rotunda Gallery in Kitchener City Hall, the Cambridge Centre for the Arts, Berlin Art Space in Kitchener, and various group shows throughout the region with The Grand River Artist Collective (Art$Pay). She is also an active member of The Art District Gallery in Kitchener.
Continuing to explore new directions in her art, Dominique is currently working on a series titled Waves, further deepening her connection to the natural rhythms of water.
